The DIY painting trends we forecast for 2020

Looking for an inexpensive way to increase the value of your home? Desperate to begin your DIY project with no idea where to start? Or perhaps your tired old home is just screaming for a fresh coat of paint? Whatever brings you here - welcome! And expect only the hottest DIY painting trends in the works for the new year.

While you may think it is all about the colour you choose, we are here to tell you it is more often about how you use that colour that makes your space POP. Before we begin, we should disclose that if you are planning on selling your home then we recommend sticking to more safe colours rather than super unique trends - just in case.

A few great ways to use your colour to add the wow factor is through painted trims, geometric patterns, bright interior door colours, accent walls (we love them), two-toned painted cabinets and a strip of paint between your shelves! So let's break that down shall we?

Paint your Trims
Often overlooked, painted trims can be an unexpected savior when it comes to interior painting. Painting your trim a brighter colour than the wall can add layers to your space. We imagine a soft orange wall meeting a crisp white trim or a black trim against a cream wall. Feel free to mix and match at your leisure - it is your project after all! A trending painted trim style is to paint the trim and molding similar shades of the same colour… but the twist… with a different finish to add a contemporary glow to your room. Oo la la.

Geometric Patterns
Sounds sophisticated right? You may have seen some geometric chairs, a stand out pillow or two, but how on earth does one paint a geometric pattern onto their wall? One word- Stencils! Stencils offer an easy outline to follow when painting a geometric accent wall. This trend is coming in hot for the 20s and we don’t doubt your DIY skills are too beginner to try it. You can always call in the experts if you get stuck. Our favourite colours for this trend are greys, blacks and blues.

Bright interior doors
This is a really unique and trendy way to add colour within your home! We have all walked by a red front door, but how many of us have seen pink, blue and red bedroom doors?! Of course it can be as subtle as a light grey kitchen door, a black bathroom door or what have you. This trend is sure to put your interior colour game one step above the others and you can even claim the idea as your own - we won’t tell.

Accent walls
Accent walls aren’t a new trend by any means, but they are timeless and as such we felt we just had to include them in the forecast for 2020 (it would be rude not to). However we can offer you a twist on this classic feature through the use of colour. Specifically DARK paint like charcoal is absolutely booming at the moment, giving off a dramatic yet comforting vibe. You may have seen it in the hipsters digest or in the back of your favourite coffee house but this accent wall can be brilliant within the home, add colour through the furniture you pair with the space.

Two-toned paint cabinets
We are referring to the kitchen’s cabinets when we mention two-toned paint of course! This trend is very new and often is reflecting with white painted high cabinets and darker paint options on the lower cabinets. This is a great tool in upping your kitchen’s elegance and design etticitte. You can really go crazy and choose any combination of colour you like here and further accentuate the lower cabinets with some LED underlighting… we recommend calling us (service.com.au) for this job.

A strip of paint between your shelves
What does that even mean? Well every good home should have a bookcase in it and an eccentric pop of colour fits perfectly within its shelves! Whether its holding books, storage, utensils or whatever… your shelving system can be the ideal place to add a pop of colour! This is also ideal for anyone wanting to experiment with colour without touching the actual walls.

And we are DONE. Service.com.au’s DIY painting trends forecast for 2020, you saw it first. Boy oh boy are we excited to see what you come up with for 2030.
